Obscure Chocolate Fact - Chocolate & Microwave Invention

I thought I knew most facts about chocolate however here is one that is strange but (apparently) true - chocolate is responsible for the invention of the microwave.

Here's how...scientists were initially experimenting with micro waves in the hopes of creating a better radar detector. In the wake of WWII, they were testing devices called magnetrons. In one such lab, a scientist named Percy Spencer happened to stroll through with a chocolate bar in his pocket.

So far pretty ordinary...but when he discovered the chocolate bar in his pocket had melted, Spencer realized that he might be able to use the magnetron for something other than a radar detector and that was to cook food. He tried popping corn (successfully) and then thought he'd give 'real' food a try. His first experiment? An egg, which cooked so quickly it blew up in his face!

Possibly he should have stuck with chocolate, it wasn't going to blow up in his face and a lot more satisfaction than an egg (unless of course we are talking Easter Eggs!)
